Coyotes Sighted in Westchester

Not a Real CoyoteCoyotes have been sighted in Westchester County since an alert went out in March 2010. Two people have been attacked. Therefore AskRey.net is issuing these uncommon sense warnings if you see a coyote in your neck of the woods.

The Coyote, otherwise known as "Carnivorous vulgaris", "Famishius fantasticus" or even "Eatibus almost anythingus", should never be fed. Doing so can make them less afraid of humans and potentially more dangerous.

Coyotes are most active dusk to dawn. Avoid walking pets after dark. Keep pets like cats and small dogs indoors. When walking small dogs, always keep them on a leash. Never rub barbeque sauce or Laury’s Seasoning salt on yourself or your pets. This might make you more tasty to coyotes.

If you encounter a coyote that behaves aggressively, you have probably gotten too close to its prey or its family. Throw rocks, sticks or other objects. Do not turn away and run. If a Coyote is chasing you, draw a picture of the road into a brick wall and hide in the bushes. The coyote will smash straight into the wall thinking he is running down the road. Coyotes have very bad depth perception.

If you and the Coyote run off a cliff while in the heat of the chase, just keep going. You can suspend gravity while running with a coyote, but as soon as he realizes he is in the air, he will plummet into the ground with only a proof ring left.

Keep yards free of potential hiding places. Remove thick brush and weeds. Enclose the bottoms of porches and decks. The Coyote will purchase an ACME product such as rocket skates, a boulder on a spring board, or a completely unsafe death machine to try and catch you. Simply step to the side when he springs his trap. Inevitably the trap will ensnare the coyote and you can continue on your merry way.

Bring along pepper spray or a stick in case a coyote gets aggressive. If you see a coyote, wave your arms, shout, spray it with a hose. Be a threat! (Screaming or yelling and waving arms sometimes won't work on coyotes that are driving cars, flying planes or operating hot air balloons.)

If none of this works, purchase a Road Runner and let him loose. The coyote will be doomed. For additional coyote tips… AskRey.
