Is Rent 2 DAMN High?
Jimmy McMillan, candidate for New York State Governor, started his own political party called the Rent 2 DAMN High Party. His whole platform is to fix the state economy by lowering rents for families in the state. It's been reported that he pays zero rent in New York City for the past ten years. So how are rents in Westchester? Are Westchester rents 2 DAMN high?
According to the Westchester MLS, which tracks rents with brokers, studios rent for $1165 per month. One bedrooms were $1456. Two bedrooms were $1900, and a three bedroom rents for $3074. According to Westchester Residential Opportunities, Inc. (WRO), which tracks apartment listings advertised in newspapers, from private landlords and via the internet without brokers or other fees, Westchester studios averaged only $950 per month. One bedrooms were $1283. Two bedrooms were $1650, and a three bedroom will run you $1950.
How does this compare to New York City?
A Manhattan studio (four walls, a closet kitchen and a toilet) averages $1811 per month. One bedrooms were $2501. Two bedrooms were $3445, and a three bedroom will run you $4478. "Average rents are up across all apartment categories, when comparing the third quarter of 2010 to the same period in 2009. The most meaningful increases (@ 3.9% and 3.2%) were for studio and one bedroom units. Rent increases for these categories are especially relevant, as these types of units make up approximately 75% of the available rental stock in Manhattan, " according to citi-habitats.com.
