Best of Westchester – Arts, Leisure & Nightlife

Every Wednesday is date night. For the past 21 years, my wife and I have been going on dates. But sometimes we run out of ideas. Sooooo…. we open Westchester Magazine’s Best of Westchester, and check out some of the best arts, leisure & nightlife venues in the area. Here are some of their choices which have been “pre-approved” by AskRey.net.

The Bayou, Mount Vernon 914-6668-2634

What kind of place combines blues music, zydeco, rock-n-roll with hush puppies, mudbugs, alligator sausage and other N’awlins favorites? The Bayou! Live music with a kick butt bar brings New Orleans to Mount Vernon. The food is good; the people are friendly and the music rocks. Approved!

Bronx River Parkway Bicycle Sundays, White Plains to Yonkers

Dust off your bicycle and ride! From April to October, a seven-mile stretch of the Bronx River Parkway from EXIT 4 (Scarsdale Road) in Tuckahoe north to EXIT 22 (County Center) in White Plains closes to automobile traffic each Sunday between 10 AM and 2 PM. During those times, the Westchester County Parks Department runs "Bicycle Sundays" along this stretch of the parkway. Approved!

Caramoor International Music Festival, Katonah 914-232-5035

Every summer world class performers descend on Caramoor in Katonah to amaze and delight. You don’t have to go down to Lincoln Center in NYC to be dazzled. This summer alone you can see Jazz Festivals at the Venetian Theatre, Sambo do Rio from Brazil, ItalianFolk Songs & Dance, Oumou Sangare from Mali, a Classical Orchestra from St Luke’s, Irish Music and a Beijing Guitar Duo!!!Some of these are only $10. Approved!

Grand Prix New York, Mount Kisco 914-241-3131

Get your NASCAR on in Westchester. Suit up like the pros and climb into a championship caliber Sodi kart. Rev up the 6.5 horsepower, Honda GX 200 4-stroke engines and hit the gas. The cart will top out at 40 mph, but it definitely feels like you are going 206 mph; plus you can always lie on your YouTube video. There are tracks for kids 8-12, and a track for the 13 and up. They even haveadult and kid racing leagues! Approved!

Rye Playland, Rye 914-813-7000

If you go to Paris, you see the Eifel Tower. If you go to Egypt, you see the Pyramids. If you go to Westchester, you see Rye Playland. It should be a law. The Pyramids don’t have the Dragon Coaster like Rye does. I don’t remember a log flume at the Eifel tower. Plus Rye has cotton candy, carousels and Kiddyland. Yea! Approved!

Google the Best of Westchester 2011 and you will find a ton of other leisure venues to try. Many of them are super affordable and family friendly. If you need a….um… “guide”… (shameless attempt to get myself invited to your outing)… AskRey.
